4. Soft Boiled Eggs & Roti Bakar

The Asian version of soft-boiled eggs, these eggs are simply cracked into a small cup is seasoned with lashings of soya sauce and a huge helping of pepper and scooped straight from the bowl.

This molten goodness is usually accompanied by toast of bread, laden with chunks of butter, and sandwiched with kaya. The alternative name, roti kahwin, which literally translates to married bread. But for the true classic, the bread should be toasted over an open charcoal flame giving it that heady aroma of the outdoors.

5. Bubur

Bubur is the ultimate, Asian comfort food. It is rice, boiled down to a silky porridge consistency, and then the addition of flavor begins. You can usually opt for a simple base of either chicken, or fish. Crack in an egg for an extra ringgit and it comes out almost creamy. Each stall has its own toppings then it becomes a meal in itself.

While you are here, you must give their Roti Canai a try or two. The roti is so skilfully prepared that they manage to crisp up the outside but leave the inside fluffy and soft, which is the perfect combination of textures for such a simple dish. The quintessential Malaysian breakfast food item.

6. Roti Canai & Roti Naan

Roti canai is of Indian extraction but has become almost entirely Malaysian. Believed to have originated in the Indian Muslim population, usually meaning it is Halal, it is a flatbread created. Served with sides of dhal curry and tamarind sauce, the roti kosong (literally empty bread) is the classic.

Nowadays, you can also opt from egg and onion to banana, but with these, the dough is folded around the ingredients, losing a little of that amazing texture along the way. Sometimes the simple option is the best.

7. Mee Jawa

Mee Jawa is probably the noodle option for you. With ellow noodles, the dish is a constant surprise in every mouthful. One minute savoury, the next entirely sweet, it is wonderfully startling. 10. Sibu Night Market

Location: Jalan Market, Pekan Sibu, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak

The local night market (on every night) in Sibu. Sibu, as do most towns in Malaysia, has a night market, and in this case, it seems to be on every night. It was great to be back to have a look around, and to try some of the food on offer.

Besides food this market is fairly typical in that it sells the usual range of things, stuff for the house, clothes, shoes, odds and ends, fruit and vegetables (no meat or fish, you need the covered market for that) and LOTS of food.
